Gotha Update

2025-2026 be the ONE.

Gotha Update - Week of November 17, 2025

I hope everyone had a GREAT weekend. Be on the lookout for quarter 2 progress reports. They will be coming home with your student on Thursday.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 8th grade Double Good Popcorn fundraiser. We will continue to fundraise for the 8th graders to offset the cost of incentives such as Gradventure.

Our Grizzlies Give Drive was also a huge success! Your generosity never ceases to amaze me.

FAST Progress Monitoring 2

The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) is a progress monitoring system that is administered three times per year to track your student’s progress in learning the Benchmarks of Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards. The purpose of this letter is to inform you that your student will participate in the second administration (PM2) of the Grade 6- 8 Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) ELA Reading and Mathematics assessments on December 2nd and December 4th . Your student’s results from PM2 provide mid-year information on student progress, and you will be provided with information about how to access the results after testing is completed.

FAST assessments are computer-adaptive tests taken on a computer or tablet. The questions get easier or more difficult depending on how the student responds, and each student will see different questions from a common item bank. Each test attempt (PM1, PM2, and PM3) will present 35–40 items that will cover the entire test “blueprint,” meaning students will encounter items representative of the standards within the subject or grade level. For more information on the test design, please visit https://www.fldoe.org/accountability/assessments/k-12-student-assessment/best/.

If you or your student would like to interact with the online testing platform or review FAST ELA Reading and Mathematics sample items at home, sample test materials are available at https://flfast.org/families.html.

If you have any questions related to this test administration, you may contact Rebecca Brown at Rebecca.Brown4@ocps.net .

For more information about the FAST program, please visit the portal at https://flfast.org/fsa.html

Literacy News: Sneaky Reading

Teens can sneak in reading time at home by utilizing discreet methods like e-readers/phone apps, audiobooks, reading in short bursts during "in-between" moments, and keeping reading material easily accessible in various spots around the house.
Utilizing Technology Discreetly
  • E-readers and Reading Apps: Use a Kindle or a reading app on a phone to read discreetly. The device's appearance is similar to that of a phone, so it is less likely parents will question the activity. The Libby app allows users to borrow ebooks and audiobooks for free from a local library.
  • Audiobooks and Podcasts: Listen to audiobooks or book-related podcasts using headphones while doing chores, exercising, commuting, or before sleeping. This makes reading a secondary activity that doesn't look like "sitting down to read."
  • Online Platforms: Explore online content such as fanfiction or articles on sports or celebrity sites that align with existing interests. This counts as reading and can be done on devices already in use.
  • Read Along with Subtitles: Turn on the subtitles or closed captioning when watching a TV show or movie (many of which are based on books). This incorporates reading practice into screen time.

OCPS Code of Student Conduct Updates

As always, the OCPS Code of Student Conduct can be found HERE.

The week before a holiday break, student behavior is typically characterized by a mix of excitement and anticipation, leading to increased restlessness, reduced focus, higher energy levels, and occasional emotional changes. Please talk to your student about following the code of student conduct every day, even when there's a big break on the horizon.
